Tuesday’s statement by Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, stressed the importance of making the United Nations Security Council more inclusive
“We recognize that in order to meet the challenges facing us, members of UN must not only uphold its charter but also modernize the institution, including making the Security Council more inclusive,” Blinken said to reporters at a joint conference where he spoke with S Jaishankar, the visiting Minister for External Affairs.
He stated that President Joe Biden had expressed support for the increase in the number of permanent and non-permanent Security Council representatives, which was a long-standing goal for India.
The top American diplomat stated that this includes permanent seats for nations we have long supported and permanent seats to countries in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Jaishankar, who traveled from New York to attend the UN General Assembly Sessions in New York, stated that reforming the UN was a very important topic.
“We are grateful for the positive attitude of the US towards this issue, as reflected in President Biden’s position. He said that he looked forward to working with the US on this issue.
“I also expressed my appreciation for the US’s strong cooperation in tackling international terrorist acts. I am referring to the UN sanction process that listed terrorists wanted and well-known. Jaishankar stated that our countries also collaborate in many other ways to make the world safer and secure.
