Indian and Chinese troops will take part in a week-long multi-country exercise in Russia later this month, with both countries’ armies practicing joint military maneuvers amid border tensions in eastern Ladakh and the war in Ukraine.
In addition to China, the drills, led by host Russia, will involve troops from India, Belarus, Mongolia, Tajikistan and other countries, China’s Defense Ministry said in a brief statement on Wednesday. The exercise, which will be held between August 30 and September 5 at various military facilities in Russia, is likely to be followed closely globally by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
While there was no official comment from the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, people familiar with the matter said the two countries have sent troops for such exercises in the past as part of their multilateral commitment to cooperate on defense and security issues.
Indian Army officials also declined to comment officially on upcoming drills, but said there were examples of India and China participating in multi-national drills held in Russia last year.
China’s Ministry of Defense said the activity was “immaterial” to the ongoing worldwide and territorial circumstance. The Russian government affirmed the “Vostok” (East) penetrates last month without sharing subtleties.
