In the largest wave of strikes since months, Russian missiles fell on Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine on October 10.
On October 17, 2022, Ukraine claimed that Russia attacked Kyiv with a “kamikaze” drone swarm. This was a statement made by the president’s office. It said this was an act desperation eight months after Russia invaded.
A journalist from AFP in Kyiv witnessed drones hovering low above a central area of the capital while police fired at them using automatic weapons and smoke rising out of explosions.
This attack follows a Russian missile strike that struck cities in Ukraine for two days. It disrupted national energy supplies and caused disruptions to water supply.
Sergiy Prikhodko a taxi driver, said that they seem to be hitting him every Monday now. He was waiting for a fare at the central Kyiv train station.
“It’s an entirely new way to start the week.”
Just before the explosion, sirens from an air raid siren were heard in Kyiv (0335 GMT) shortly. They were followed by sirens throughout the rest of the country.
“All night, all day, the enemy terrorises civilians. All of Ukraine is being attacked by Kamikaze missiles and drones. “The enemy can attack our cities but it won’t break us,” President Volodymyr Zilensky stated.
Vitali Klitschko, Kyiv mayor, said that a residential building in central Shevchenkivsky had been damaged. He stated that 18 people were rescued, but that two people were still trapped beneath the rubble.
More air defences’
Alexander Kamyshin (head of the national railways) confirmed earlier attacks on the capital’s central rail hub.
“We need more air defense systems as soon as we can. Zelensky’s chief staff officer, Andriy Yarmak, stated on social media that more weapons are needed to defend the skies and defeat the enemy.
He also wrote that “the Russians believe it will help but it shows their despair.”
According to the Ukrainian military, Russian missiles and drones were hitting cities and towns across Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian military, Russian forces have fired 26 air strikes and two missiles so far. More than 80 rocket attacks were also reported.
The defence ministry released a separate statement stating that the Ukrainian military had shot down 37 Iranian Shahed136 drones and three cruise missiles fired by Russian terrorists in the last 13 hours.
Klitschko in Kyiv stated that earlier, the drone attacks in Shevchenkivsky had caused a fire which damaged many buildings. He advised residents to seek shelter.
“Fire departments are operating. Numerous residential buildings were also damaged. Telegram: “Medics are at the scene,” he stated.
“We are clarifying information regarding the casualties.”
