The Department of Justice is investigating the removal of documents from the White House. These documents were then transferred to Donald Trump’s Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago. Investigators are currently investigating how the documents were stored and who might have had access to them.
In August, 11,000 documents including about 100 classified were found in the sprawling property on the beachside of the former president. Some of these documents were classified as top secret.
We don’t know much about the contents of these documents, which is not surprising. However, classified material often contains information that officials fear could compromise national security.
What has Trump actually said?
He denied any wrongdoing, and he criticized the investigation by the justice department, calling it “politically motivated”, and a “witch hunt”.
Shifting defenses have been offered by him, which rely heavily on the argument that he has declassified the material. This is a supposition that has not been supported by evidence.
The former president also claimed that certain documents were protected by “privilege”, a legal concept that prevents them from being used in future cases. A separate lawyer is currently reviewing the seized material in order to determine if that is the case. This process is ongoing.
However, Trump hasn’t addressed the crucial question of why these documents were at Mar-a-Lago.
How serious is this?
This is a criminal investigation that could lead to charges.
The justice department believes that Mr. Trump may have broken the Espionage Act by keeping national intelligence information that could be used to harm the United States.
Prosecutors are looking into obstruction of justice as a possible crime in addition to charges related to the classified documents.
