Kabul: Police said that 19 people were killed in a suicide attack at an Afghan learning center as they prepared for Friday’s exams.
The explosion occurred in western Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, which is a predominantly Shiite Muslim neighborhood that houses the minor Hazara community. This area has been the site of many of the most fatal attacks in Afghanistan.
“Students were studying for an exam when a suicide bomber attacked this educational center. According to Khalid Zadran, a police spokesperson, 19 people were killed and 27 more were injured.
Video footage posted online and photos from local media show bloodied victims being taken away from the scene.
“Security teams have arrived at the site, and the nature of the attack has been determined. Details of the casualties will also be released later,” a spokesperson for the interior ministry Abdul Navy Takor tweeted earlier.
“Attacking civilian targets proves enemy’s inhuman cruelty, lack of moral standards.”
Although the Taliban’s victory in Afghanistan in 2001 brought an end to the two-decade war, and a substantial reduction in violence in the country, security has been deteriorating under the control of hardline Islamists in recent months.
The Shiite Hazaras of Afghanistan have been subject to persecution for many decades. Taliban were accused of abusing the group during their first rule from 1996 to 2001.
After they were elected to power again, such accusations were repeated.
The Taliban’s enemy, the Islamic State group, also targets Hazaras often. Both view them as heretics.
Numerous attacks have decimated the area, many of which targeted children, women, and schools.
Three bombs detonated near Dasht-e-Barchi school last year killed at least 85 people, mostly girls students, and left about 300 others injured.
Although no group claimed responsibility for the attack, IS claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that took place in the same area last year. This incident resulted in 24 deaths including students.
The group was responsible for the May 2020 attack that resulted in 25 deaths, including mothers, in the maternity ward at a local hospital.
