UN summit sets zero emissions goal for air travel
International Civil Aviation Organization holds its first meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
As the UN’s aviation body meets, countries were urged to set a goal of zero-net air travel emissions. This is the first meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Salvatore Sciacchitano was the president of the ICAO Council and spoke at Tuesday’s opening of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) assembly. He stated that “mere aspirations no longer suffice where our climate and the well-being of our planet and all of its species are concerned.”
Sciacchitano is the head of one of two agency’s governing bodies. He stated that “when challenges confront humanity on truly global scales, as they most certainly do right now, there is an expectation that aviation will be at the forefront of our collective global response.”
The ICAO assembly is held every three years. It follows a July preparatory meeting that urged the 193 members to join hands to create a plan to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050.
The meeting will take place in Montreal, Canada over 10 days. It is expected that the assembly will also discuss recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as aviation-related issues that resulted from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This led to Western governments and airlines blacklisting Russian aircraft.
After global airlines committed last October to net-zero emission by 2050, governments are now trying to reach a deal.
A deal would require the bridging of significant differences between countries. Major economies like India, Russia, and China have set less ambitious targets to achieve zero emissions by 2060 or 2070.
Willie Walsh (director general of the International Air Transport Association, which represents nearly 300 airlines) said that the industry hoped that the ICAO would address many of the challenges facing the sector.
Willie Walsh stated, “For example, governments must learn from COVID-19 so the next pandemic doesn’t result in closed borders that bring social and economic hardship.”
“We also need governments that support the industry’s goal to net zero carbon emissions by 2020 with their commitments and appropriate policy measures. Governments can make the right decisions to accelerate recovery from COVID-19, and strengthen the foundations of aviation’s decarbonization.
Global emissions from air travel account for 2.5-3 percent of climate change.
