Spain’s government has fined Glovo, a food delivery company, nearly EUR80 million for its violations of labour laws. More than 10,000 regular riders were mistreated by the Spanish company as self-employed workers, instead of employees.
App-based food delivery services in Spain must employ full-time employees under a law dated 2021.
Yolanda Diaz, Spanish Labour Minister, stated that “we are talking about workers who actually are not self-employed.”
Diaz stated to reporters that the company will bear the full weight of the law.
After trade unions requested an investigation, Glovo was fined almost EUR79 Million.
Glovo stated in a statement that it would appeal against the “unilateral solution” and claimed the case dates back to before Spain changed its labour laws in August 2021.
The European Union is currently working on new regulations to strengthen workers’ rights on digital platforms like Deliveroo, Uber, and Glovo.
