On Wednesday, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian President, addressed the United Nations, asking world leaders to unite against Russia’s war in Ukraine, and to remove Moscow’s veto power at the UN Security Council.
Zelensky, in his usual fatigues, stated that “a crime was committed against Ukraine” and demanded punishment in a prerecorded message. This message was met with standing ovations from scattered New York delegates.
He said that the Russian invasion of a member country has turned the world upside down. This was in line with the assessments made earlier by several world leaders, including Joe Biden, on the same platform.
Zelensky stated that “as long as an aggressor is part in the decision-making at the international organization, then you must isolate yourself from them, preferably until the aggression ceases,” in his speech before the UN General Assembly.
“Reject the right of vote. You will be denied the right to delegate. If you are a member, eliminate the right to veto.
A brief background: Russia is a permanent member in good standing of the UN Security Council and one of five countries with the right to veto.
