Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday that a “partial mobilization” of the population would be undertaken in the midst of the conflict in Ukraine.
Russian forces have been suffering setbacks over the past weeks due to a series of counter-offensives from Ukrainian troops. Putin made his announcement in a 15-minute televised speech.
He had previously delayed his Tuesday afternoon remarks due to unspecified reasons. According to the president, the measure will be in effect on Wednesday due to the need for the country to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
However, pro-Russian authorities within the self-proclaimed popular republics Lugansk, Donetsk, and the regions Jerson and Zaporiya have already coordinated the organizational aspects for a referendum to decide on legal accession to these territories to Russia.
Its results will be considered “null” by the EU.
