At least 9 people died on Thursday morning, while another 20 were hurt in an accident at the end of a concert in western Guatemala.
Volunteer firefighters confirmed the deaths and injuries in Quetzaltenango which is 200 kilometers west of Guatemala City. It is the second-largest city in the country.
The concert was part in the Independence Day celebrations which are celebrated every September 15th, Guatemala.
According to the same source the tragedy happened in Quetzaltenango, and the injured were transported to the Western Regional Hospital for “blows and possible fractures.”
“At this point, there is no data (on the identities) of the victims. “It is the Public Ministry that leads the process,” Amilcar Rivas of Quetzaltenango, said to reporters.
Local media reports that at least two of the victims were women. One of them was a minor. They are waiting for authorities to release the official list.
Witnesses claimed that the deceased were crushed as they tried to leave the concert because the doors were shut and that they were caught between the others and them.
The Public Ministry (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) is present at the scene of tragedy and Wednesday night’s concert, which more than 5,000 spectators witnessed.
In 1996, 83 people died in Central American countries and more than 200 were hurt in a similar stampede at Doroteo Guiamuch Flores stadium (also known as Mateo Flores at that time) during a qualifying match for 1998 World Cup France in France between Guatemala & Costa Rica.
