The resolution of the EU Parliament condemns China’s aggression toward Taiwan
According to the resolution, China’s provocative actions against Taiwan should have consequences for EU-China relations.
The European Parliament members overwhelmingly supported a resolution condemning China’s military aggression on Taiwan. They also stated that Beijing’s “provocative acts” must have implications for relations with the European Union.
The resolution, which stated that Taiwan and the European Union are “like-minded” partners that support the values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of laws, was approved by 424 lawmakers, with 46 abstentions and 14 against.
According to the hard-hitting resolution, China had increased its “long-standing military intimidation against Taiwan” between August 4th and 10, which included firing 11 missiles at Taiwan. At least five of these missiles passed over Taiwan.
The resolution states that China also had an effective blockade in place of Taiwan’s airspace and seaspace during the drills. It also conducted a strong cyberattack against Taiwan’s private sector as well as state authorities.
The resolution noted that the Chinese missiles had been fired at Japan’s exclusive economic area during the exercise. It also stated that China’s aggressive actions within the region had led to a dispute with other countries.
According to the resolution, “The People’s Republic of China [PRC] has been acting aggressively across a vast area of the Indo-Pacific and exerting various degrees of military and economic coercion which has led directly to disputes with neighbors such as Japan, India, and the Philippines.”
The resolution states that the European Parliament is “convinced” that provocative actions by the PRC against Taiwan and the South China Sea have implications for EU-China relations. It also adds that contingency planning should be considered.
