Iran signs memorandum of understanding to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
The eight-member regional body, which includes leaders from Uzbekistan is set to include Iran as a member when they meet.
The Iranian foreign minister stated that Iran had signed a Memorandum of Omissions to become a permanent member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a central Asian security organization.
“Iran has now entered a new phase of economic, commercial and transit cooperation by signing the document for full membership in the SCO.”
This statement was made as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (India), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan), Pakistan, Russia, and Tajikistan headed to Samarkand, Russia for a summit at the SCO (8-member), a security group created by Beijing and Moscow to counter the United States’ influence.
Afghanistan, Belarus, and Iran are observers’ countries. The organization also has six “dialogue partner” countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan Cambodia, Nepal Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.
The rapidly growing SCO approved Iran’s application for accession last year. Meanwhile, Tehran’s government called on its members to assist it in forming a mechanism to evade sanctions imposed by the West over Iran’s disputed nuclear program.
Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reported from Samarkand’s Silk Road oasis that Iran’s full membership will be effective in April 2023.
He said that the SCO is the largest regional organization in the world, representing 40% of the world’s total population and 30% of global gross domestic product (GDP), and wants to expand.
Serdar stated that Belarus will also sign documents indicating its membership. “Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and other countries are expected to join the new dialogue partner.”
Ebrahim Raisi, the Iranian President, was one of the leaders who attended the summit in Samarkand. He was expected to meet Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart.
Iran’s economy has been hard hit since Trump’s unilateral abandonment of a landmark nuclear agreement between Iran and other world powers, including Russia and China, in 2018.
Indirect talks between Iran’s government and US President Joe Biden have ended in a deadlock over several obstacles to the reactivation of the nuclear pact. The agreement, which required Iran to reduce its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, was reached after months of negotiations.
