The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, delivers her 2022 State of the European Union speech this Wednesday, marked by the escalation in energy prices and the continental response to this crisis, as well as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, almost seven months after the beginning of the aggression. The speech begins at 09:00 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg (France).
After a brief intervention by the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, Von der Leyen will review for more than an hour the achievements of his administration during the last year and will mark the priorities of the course that begins.
The main topic will be the measures to face the winter in the middle of the energy crisis. Von der Leyen will present a proposal for EU countries to reduce their average electricity consumption by 10%, at least 5% in peak hours, and limit the income of electricity companies (with a cap on the electricity market between 180 and 200 euros per megawatt hour for generation from renewable, nuclear and lignite sources), as well as a tax on the extraordinary profits of fossil fuel companies.
It is foreseeable that the Commission will leave it to the Member States how to raise these additional funds and how to distribute them among the most vulnerable consumers or companies.
