“In all operational directions, air, rocket, and artillery forces are carrying out massive strikes on units of the Ukrainian armed forces,” the Russian defense ministry said in its daily briefing on the conflict.
Russia has withdrawn its forces from large swaths of northeast Ukraine, particularly the Kharkiv region after Ukrainian forces launched a lightning counter-offensive to reclaim territory held by Moscow’s forces.
In a statement, the defence ministry said it had launched “high-precision” strikes on Ukrainian positions near Sloviansk and Konstantinovka in the eastern Donetsk region.
Moscow’s forces have reported fierce battles with Ukrainian forces in the region, which has been partially controlled by Moscow-backed separatists since 2014.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin accused Kyiv’s army of abusing civilians in territory it had retaken.
According to President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, reports of “outrageous” treatment of civilians were emerging in the Kharkiv region.
“There are a lot of punitive measures… people are being tortured, mistreated, and so on,” Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
