According to a Tuesday poll, 60% of Australians would prefer to keep the monarchy as a model country while 40% believe the oceanic nation should be a republic with an elected President.
Roy Morgan, a consulting firm, conducted a survey after Queen Elizabeth II’s death. It found that monarchists have increased by 5% over the past decade.
This survey was done via text messages to 1,012 respondents. It was conducted Monday, the day after King Carlos III was declared monarch and head state of the oceanic nation.
Supporters of the monarchy have more women
The support for maintaining ties to the British crown is higher among women (66%) than it is among men (54%). The greatest divide in opinions by age is found among those below 35 years old (with 52% monarchists and 48% of Republicans), while most support for the monarchy comes from those between 50-64 years (with 67% support).
The monarchists support their decision by questioning the necessity of change and showing distrust in politicians in the eventuality of becoming a republic.
The majority of those who support a change in the model either affirm the need for an Australian head of state to make Australia an independent nation or assure that the monarchy is not representative of the current Australian society. They consider this a colonial vestige, and insult to the aborigines.
Reopening the debate
Australia’s debate about the need for a referendum on monarchy has been reopened by the death of Elizabeth II on Thursday.
Anthony Albanese, the current prime minster, made promises during this year’s election campaign to encourage a popular consultation if elected for a second term. However, he stated on Monday that it was not appropriate to talk about a constitutional amendment at this point.
The referendum was held in November 1999 by the oceanic nation to determine if Australia should be made a republic. It resulted in the “No” vote with 6.4 million votes (54.87%), against the “Yes”, with 5.2million ballots (45.13%).
