According to the president of Ukraine, Ukrainian forces have taken more territory from Russia in their counter-offensive.
Volodymyr Zelensky stated that troops have retaken over 6,000 km (2,317 miles) of Russian control since September. This was in the east as well as the south.
Russia admitted to losing key cities in Kharkiv’s north-eastern Kharkiv area, in what some military experts consider a breakthrough in the war.
Moscow describes the recent troop withdrawal from the area as a “regrouping”, with the goal of focusing on the Luhansk, and Donetsk regions in Ukraine’s east.
This claim was ridiculed in Russia as many social media users described the pull-out as “shameful”.
Later on Monday, US Secretary Antony Blinken stated that Ukrainian forces had made “significant advances” in the counter-offensive but it was too soon to predict the outcome.
“The Russians have very large forces in Ukraine, as well as weapons, arms, and munitions. As we have seen, they continue to use it indiscriminately not only against the Ukrainian armed forces but also civilians and civil infrastructure,” Mr. Blinken stated.
On 24 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine. Russia holds approximately a fifth of the country.
In his last video address Monday, President Zelensky stated that “From the beginning of September to today, our soldiers have already liberated over 6,000 km of territory in Ukraine – in both the east and the south.”
He said, “The movement continues of our troops.”
It appears that the counter-offensive was swift. President Zelensky claimed that Ukrainian forces had retaken 1,000 km of territory last Thursday. However, the number had tripled by Sunday to 3,000 km.
Zelensky thanked a number of Ukrainian brigades that participated in the counter-offensive and described their fighters to be “true heroes”.
He didn’t reveal the names of the liberated cities or villages in Ukraine.
Russia’s military admitted earlier that it had to evacuate the major cities of Balakliya and Izyum in the Kharkiv area. Russia controls only a small portion of the eastern region.
In the south Kherson region, bordering Crimea, significant – though slower – military advances by Ukrainian troops were also reported. This is a Ukrainian peninsula that Russia annexed in 2014.
Officials from the UK Defence Ministry claim that recent victories by the Ukrainian Army will have “significant consequences” for Russia’s overall operational design.
Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, insists that military operations in Ukraine will continue until all tasks have been completed.
Russia claims that its forces have carried out strikes in the areas retaken recently by Ukraine.
