BEIJING — China’s leader Xi Jinping will fly to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan beginning Wednesday. This is his first overseas trip since the outbreak of the pandemic two years ago.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated Monday in a brief statement that Xi would attend a meeting of heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Samarkand as part of a state visit to Uzbekistan. The statement also stated that Xi will be visiting Kazakhstan as a state visitor.
It said that Xi’s trip would take place from Wednesday through Friday.
Xi will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit of the SCO. This is an economic, political, and security forum where Russia and China dominate. They last met in Beijing on January 1, just weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine.
China’s Communist Party leader was last seen abroad in January 2020 at the start of the pandemic. He visited Myanmar on a state trip before other countries closed their borders and imposed lockdowns.
Xi has been on the move since then to mainland China for a one-day visit to Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese city. He was there to address a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the British took of Hong Kong.
This trip is just weeks before the 20th Communist Party Congress, a major political gathering that takes place every five years and where future leaders are revealed. Xi will likely be awarded a third five-year term as party leader.
