As the search continues for survivors, the death toll from the earthquake in west China rose to 93
Authorities reported that the death toll from the earthquake in west China rose to 93 while survivors were still being sought.
Last week, Sichuan province was hit by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake. Most of the damage was concentrated in the Ganze Tibetan Autonomous Region.
According to the state broadcaster, 25 more people were still missing as of Sunday evening. Heavy rains and the risk of landslides made it difficult to search for survivors and recover bodies. Some residents had to flee to temporary shelters.
Chengdu, the provincial capital was also hit by the earthquake. Residents were subject to strict zero-COVID restrictions, which meant they could not leave their homes. Online footage showed residents banging on metal gates in front of apartment buildings as they tried to flee their homes.
China’s zero-COVID restrictions continue to apply to tens of millions. Chengdu’s local government has announced that some districts in which there have been no COVID-19 new cases will be allowed back to work on Monday. Many of the 21 million people living in Chengdu remain locked down. Monday’s coronavirus infection in the city was reported at 143. More than half of those who were not symptomatic had no symptoms.
China continues to maintain its system of mass testing and lockdowns, despite the fact that the rest of the world is loosening restrictions. While the country’s policy has prevented many deaths, it has also kept millions of people locked up in their homes for weeks to even months.
