India launches a new aircraft carrier to counter China’s growing concerns
INS Vikrant, India’s largest warship, can carry a crew of up to 1,600 people and can operate a fleet with 30 fighter planes.
India has ordered its first domestically-built aircraft carrier. This is in response to China’s growing fleet of warships. It also aims to expand India’s shipbuilding capabilities.
The INS Vikrant is India’s second largest operational aircraft carrier. Its name is the Sanskrit term for “powerful” and “courageous”. This aircraft joins the Soviet-era INS Vikramaditya, which was purchased from Russia in 2004 to protect the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal.
The new 262-metre (860-foot), INS Vikrant, was designed by the Indian Navy and built at the Cochin Shipyard in south India. It was launched Friday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence from British rule.
Modi stressed that India is not only improving its naval capabilities but also the importance of India being one of the few countries with an existing aircraft carrier production program.
Modi stated that it was a landmark day and a landmark achievement. It’s an example that the government is determined to make India’s defense sector self-reliant.
According to the navy, the carrier is the largest Indian warship and can carry around 1,600 crew members and operate a fleet that includes fighter jets, helicopters, and other aircraft.
Initially, the Vikrant will rely on Russian-designed MIG-29K fighter planes that are already in operation from the INS Vikramaditya.
After the first landing trials with the MiG-29K aircraft, the 47-tonne warship will become fully operational by 2023. India plans to equip it with more than 20 new fighters. At the moment, the Rafale-M aircraft from France’s Dassault is being considered.
According to the defense ministry, more than 75% of India’s new aircraft carrier components were procured in India. There are more than a dozen large industrial companies and over 100 small businesses that provide equipment and machinery.
According to defense experts, a delay of six years caused a sixfold increase in the construction cost to 200 billion Indian rupees ($2.5bn).
India has 1.38 million soldiers, many of them stationed at borders with nuclear-armed China and Pakistan.
