French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to continue France’s humanitarian and economic support to Ukraine as well as to bolster European unity in order to put pressure on Russia and stop it from winning the war in Ukraine.
PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron pledged Thursday to continue France’s humanitarian and economic support to Ukraine. He also promised to bolster European unity to put pressure on Russia to stop it from winning the war in Ukraine.
Macron stated that Russia cannot win the war militarily in a speech he made to French ambassadors at Elysee’s presidential palace.
He set out to enable Ukraine to win militarily or to be in a strong place to negotiate peace.
Macron stated that “We must be prepared for a long-term war”, adding that tensions would escalate over Ukraine’s nuclear weapons.
Macron stated that France supported the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Thursday visit to Zaporizhzhia to evaluate its safety. After the IAEA mission ends, Macron suggested that he would call Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart.
Macron pledged to “keep talking” to Russia, despite criticisms from some countries, particularly in eastern Europe which supports a hardline stance towards Moscow. He said that Russia and Ukraine must “do everything possible to make a peaceful settlement possible”.
Macron stated that Europe must not be divided over the conflict in Ukraine and its aftermath, adding that the EU should not align itself with “warmongers” nor allow countries from Eastern Europe to support Kyiv.
Macron spoke for nearly two hours, praising the views of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Prague earlier this week, as being “fully consistent” with his plea for a stronger and more independent Europe.
Macron called for Europe to “defend” its freedoms, and values, and to “fight for” them
He also called on French diplomats not to allow misinformation, false news, and propaganda to be spread via social media.
Paris must use communication tools to “break Chinese, Turkish, and Russian storytelling” and “say when France’s wrongly attacked, to tell what France actually did,” he stated.
