America’s longest war ended last year with the withdrawal of troops at midnight on 31 August. This was a military intervention that started in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York.
The conflict resulted in the deaths of 66,000 Afghan troops, 48,000 civilians, and 2,461 US service personnel. However, the American public was unable to take the loss of these 2461 soldiers.
Additionally, more than 3,500 soldiers from NATO countries were killed.
The US military stated Tuesday that “the burden of war in Afghanistan however, was beyond Americans.”
Two weeks prior to the end of last year’s withdrawal, the Taliban took power in a lightning attack against government forces.
On Wednesday, banners in Kabul hailed victories over three empires — the British and former Soviet Union lost wars in Afghanistan respectively – flew.
Numerous white Taliban flags with the Islamic proclamation were seen flying from government buildings and lamposts.
Late Tuesday night, fireworks and celebratory gunfire were heard from Taliban fighters as the sky above Kabul was lit up.
Near the former US Embassy, militiamen armed with Taliban flags shouted “Death To America” in Massoud Square. Others drove through the city honking their cars.
