Ottawa names new head nursing officer amid Canada-wide health worker deficit
As Canada’s health care system continues to witness significant pressures, the civil government has appointed a new public head nursing officer, reinstating a position that aims to bring further input from nursers to national health- care policy conversations and decision- timber.
Leigh Chapman has been named to the position, a 20- year nursing stager who has worked in leadership positions in critical care, home, and community care, and detriment reduction and has held positions in academia, exploration, regulation, professional practice, and administration.
This is the first time anyone has held the job of public chief nursing officer( CNO) since 2012 when the position was still excluded “ at a time when the government was realigning coffers across precedences, ” according to a civil government news release issued a moment.
“ Still, in this current terrain, the CNO is viewed as an important part and has been resourced consequently, ” the release says.
Chapman’s appointment comes as the country’s health- care system is passing unknown strain, including a civil deficit of nurses and other health workers. These staffing deaths have been cited by health- care leaders across the country as a major factor in the temporary closures of dozens of exigency departments and reductions of health services in every fiefdom and home over the last many months.
